If a dream is a wish your heart makes, rising senior Amanda Briggs is dreaming about the arts. The graphic design major’s love for art has carried through her entire life, and last year, she had the opportunity to pursue her passion in the Disney College Program.
The Disney College Program provides students with real-world experience working in the parks and resorts and offers opportunities for students to participate in college coursework as well.
At Disney, Amanda worked at the American restaurant in Epcot. She emphasizes the importance of the relationships she formed on the job.
“It was eye-opening working at Epcot because I got to interact with people from different countries and cultures,” she said. “One of the best parts of the experience was all the people I got to meet and all the friends I made.”
In addition to working at Epcot, Amanda had the opportunity to meet and hear from marketing representatives at the company.
“I learned about Disney heritage, the history of the company, how it got started and how it was built into the company it is today,” Amanda said. “I gained insight into Disney communications both within and outside the company. I took graphic design seminars and got a sneak peek into the design process of the park maps and posters.”
Spreading the Magic
Back on campus, Amanda is applying her newfound knowledge to her classes and overall college experience. The opportunity allowed her to focus on her strengths and streamline her interests in the arts. One day she hopes to work in marketing or in magazine production.
“I’m so passionate about art,” Amanda said. “It allows you to be creative. It’s a fun outlet to express yourself and show your interests. I’m big into animals and nature and like being able to draw that and create something meaningful. It shows off your personality in a way. I’ve learned that being an artist allows you to show your personal style, and my classes have really helped me in that sense.”
Not only have her classes taught her the importance of uniqueness in the art world, they have also encouraged her to branch out and try new experiences. She joined the bowling team and serves as the secretary in Art Alliance. Participating in these activities has allowed Amanda to break out of her shell, meet new people and make a difference in the community.
“Getting involved has definitely put me out of my comfort zone and made me more confident in myself,” she said. “I have support from friends and professors in art and in my personal life. I’m not quite as shy as I used to be and it’s evolved me into a more confident person. And I’m confident that once I leave Olivet, I can be a success and excel in my career.”
