Thomas Hickey joined The University of Olivet as the director of campus safety in 2024. He manages safety and security initiatives, coordinates emergency management training and exercise, and liaises between The University and emergency response agencies in Eaton County.

Thomas has over 32 years of experience in law enforcement. He retired from the Ann Arbor Police Department after 25 years of service. He also has 15 years of emergency management experience.

Thomas has an extensive background in community outreach and engagement. In Ann Arbor, he worked extensively with schools, businesses and neighborhood associations to maintain an open and transparent relationship. Thomas was also involved in juvenile justice and mental health programs to help mentor juveniles and young adults to work through times of crisis. While living and working in Colorado, he volunteered for the City of Fort Collins Restorative Justice Program. Thomas firmly believes in volunteering and looks forward to working alongside the dedicated volunteers at The University of Olivet.

“I was honored to be hired at an institution that was the first college in Michigan to admit women and persons of color on a co-equal basis with white men dating back to 1844. I was fortunate to be raised by two parents who were strong proponents of racial diversity and proactive in promoting positive and engaging race relations.

I am excited to be a part of a closely-knit community, which hopefully will allow me to develop genuine relationships with the students, faculty and staff at The University of Olivet. It is hard to put into words how warm and embracing all the staff and faculty have been since arriving on campus. I look forward to working with such a dedicated staff,” said Thomas.
