Stephen Kolomyjec '05, Ph.D.

Stephen Kolomyjec, Ph.D., is an educator, population geneticist and field zoologist, specializing in the genetics and conservation of unique species. After graduating from UOlivet in 2005, Dr. Kolomyjec earned his doctorate in zoology from James Cook University, Australia, where his research on northern platypus populations garnered global attention, including a featurette by National Geographic. His work, published in leading journals like “Communications: Biology and Molecular Biology and Evolution,” explores the impacts of environmental changes on platypus populations and advances our understanding of freshwater sponge biodiversity in the Great Lakes region.

In the classroom, Dr. Kolomyjec has taught a broad spectrum of biology courses often focused on organismal, zoological, genetic or evolutionary themes. His practical approach is further reflected in his role at international conferences, where he highlights the integration of undergraduate students into research, fostering hands-on learning experiences that bridge theory and practice.

Dr. Kolomyjec’s contribution to the scientific community is supported by significant grants from the National Science Foundation and other prestigious organizations. He spearheaded projects such as the acquisition of innovative research instruments to enhance academic research and undergraduate training.
