Professor Meredith Dodson has been teaching creative writing and composition at The University of Olivet since 2016. She serves as director of the writing program and as the faculty adviser to the College’s literary journal, The Garfield Lake Review.

Professor Dodson’s educational background consists of an MFA in creative writing (fiction) from Georgia College and State University and an MA in teaching English from Western Michigan University. She holds a BA in English with a concentration in education from Kalamazoo College as well. Professor Dodson is in the process of completing her doctorate in educational leadership at Western Michigan University. Tying together both aspects of her career, her dissertation explores how creative writers who become leaders utilize their creative skills in the workplace.

Professor Dodson formerly served as the dean of the Binda School of Education at Miller College in Battle Creek and as the writing center director at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, in addition to having spent many years teaching and tutoring students. Of all of these places, Olivet is special because of the close-knit campus. Professor Dodson believes this is a place where friendships develop and horizons broaden. She takes this feeling into her writing classes, where students share their stories with each other and come away knowing the value of listening to each person’s unique story.
