Sophomore Macy Gorrell is a passionate soccer player and future insurance professional. She is eager to be building her professional network and personal self-confidence as a Comet, thanks to opportunities for relationship-building, traveling, service learning and much more.

I visited Olivet during my senior year of high school, and I immediately knew that this is where I wanted to be for the next four years. I was looking for a small school that felt like home where I could play soccer. I felt like I was a part of the community before I even made the decision to attend. Olivet checked all my boxes when I was on my college search. The small campus makes it quite easy to make friends, create relationships with professors and get involved.
In addition, the soccer coach, Doug Carter, made me feel welcomed and important when he was recruiting me. I really appreciated that he took the time to get to know my family and me during the recruiting process. This helped me make the decision to attend Olivet. I have played soccer since I was little and have always wanted to play in college. Being a part of the women’s soccer team is my favorite part of being at Olivet. The team is one big family which makes Olivet feel even more like home to me. I know I can count on my team and coaches to always have my back.
I am also a member of the Global Citizen Honors Program (GCHP). I joined GCHP because it provides students with opportunities to take challenging classes. There is also the GCHP writing competition for incoming students with many scholarship opportunities, including a full-tuition scholarship. I received a scholarship for participating and a scholarship for just being a member of GCHP, which was helpful when it came time to pay tuition.
I have two work-study positions on campus. I work at the Campus Store and as a peer tutor. Both positions have made working as a full-time college student-athlete possible because the hours are flexible. I have been able to create relationships with the other employees and supervisors that I work with as well.
In high school, I didn’t know what I wanted to study in college. When I heard about Olivet, I was told about the insurance and risk management program and all the benefits it has. I decided to major in insurance, and I could not be happier with my decision. I’m passionate about insurance because insurance is all about helping people. Even though many people complain about insurance, at the end of the day, insurers are there to help their clients in their time of need. As a sophomore, I am still learning about the industry and plan to get an internship this summer to learn more and find out what area I want to work in.
Being a part of the insurance program has given me many opportunities. I have been able to meet many insurance professionals at career fairs. I also am able to learn from insurance professionals who come into seminar as guest speakers. These experiences help prepare me for my future career in the insurance industry because I’m doing more than just sitting in a classroom taking notes. I was also able to take a day trip to Chicago where we went to the Chicago Federal Reserve and many other places. The insurance program has also provided me with many volunteering opportunities. Volunteering is something that I really enjoy doing because I love giving back and helping others.
Being a Comet has made me more outgoing because, at Olivet, I am a part of a community. I feel this way because I am able to be involved in many different groups on campus. If I went to a bigger school, I would not have nearly as many opportunities to get involved as I do here. I would encourage other students to attend Olivet because at Olivet you’re not just a number. Olivet is different from other colleges because it truly feels like home. The small size of the college makes it easy to create relationships with other students and professors. Everyone knows and cares about each other here.
