Senior Seth Young, an exercise science major from Jonesville, Michigan, has spent his last four years making The University of Olivet his home as he pursued his passion and prepared for a career his family knows well. Seth is seeking a profession in chiropractic therapy, just as his grandfather had successfully done for over half a century.

During the college search process, Seth decided The University of Olivet was the right fit for him thanks to opportunities with the football team. “I had a lot of success in high school for football, so I decided to take it to the next level. The coaches made my visit feel special when I was on campus, and it just felt like home,” he said. Seth went on to earn multiple All-MIAA conference awards in four seasons for his contributions to the Comet football team, but it was the influence he received from The University of Olivet academically that truly impacted his story.

While Seth did not originally choose to major in exercise science, he quickly picked up on what he cared for most and decided to change. “I chose to switch to exercise science because I loved it, and it helped that my grandfather was also a chiropractor for over 50 years. He was someone I really looked up to, which made switching my major a lot easier,” Seth said. “Since I was a young child, I have always loved helping people. I remember when I used to be in my grandfather’s office, I noticed the pain relief he would give his clients when using chiropractic therapy, and that inspired me to help people.”

During his studies, Seth participated in a co-operative education experience with Miller Chiropractic in his hometown of Jonesville where he developed skills and a better understanding of chiropractic and its related therapy. With this additional experience, Seth hopes to continue working toward his goal of earning a Doctor of Chiropractic and opening his own practice. Following in the path of his grandfather, Seth will be attending the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, ensuing his graduation this May.

“My plan is to work super hard to get my degree in chiropractic therapy. This school is where the best chiropractors are teaching students the way of this therapy, and it is also where chiropractic was founded,” Seth emphasized.

In addition to great athletic and academic opportunities, Seth also experienced personal growth at Olivet. As a person, Seth grew to understand the meaning of discipline, dependability and integrity through development inside and outside of the classroom.

“The University of Olivet taught me how to be more disciplined, which, to me, was making sure I was doing the right things. My multiple experiences from being a part of a fraternity, a football captain and fellow student have made me the person I am. It has made me an incredibly strong person mentally and has taught me how important it is to be dependable. I had awesome professors who gave me great perspective and even helped me apply to graduate school, as well as preparing me by teaching me valuable information that will enable me to be successful in my future,” Seth said.
