Rising sophomore Izabel Lazar is embracing her passion of music to the fullest at The University of Olivet. She’s a part of three ensembles on campus — the Marching Comets, the Wind Ensemble and the Jazz Band, specializing in playing the trombone. This spring, she was even honored with the Samuel Robinson Music Scholarship during Honors Week.
“I chose Olivet because when I first stepped on campus I immediately felt at home. I also loved the change of atmosphere from the busy city in my hometown of Warren to a small, quiet town. I earned a Talent and Participatory Scholarship for the Marching Comets, which helped make it possible for me to attend, and this spring I was very proud and excited to receive the Samuel Robinson Music Scholarship,” Izabel said. “It was an honor to be recognized for my growth as a musician by Jeremy Duby, director of bands. I am grateful for the opportunity that I have been given through the Olivet music program to continue growing as a trombonist.”
In addition to her growth as a musician, Izabel’s participation in the ensembles has allowed her to enjoy her college experience to the fullest.
“Being a part of these musical ensembles has helped me befriend some amazing people who will be my lifelong friends,” Izabel said. “I am also a member of the Optimist Club, and we volunteer to help better the community. In addition, I am a member of the Mathletes and Turning Point USA, which has a mission to educate students about the government. We hope to host a booth where students can register to vote.”
From bake sales to volunteer opportunities, a trip to Rome and much more, Izabel has gained a wide variety of experiences and grown a vast network through her extracurricular involvement. Savoring  campus life is Izabel’s number one piece of advice to other students.
“My number one piece of advice is to be very involved on campus. The more clubs and activities you are a part of, the more people you will meet and more opportunities will arise,” Izabel said. “Being a Comet helped me to come out of my shell. Before Olivet I was very quiet and reserved, but after joining clubs, attending events and being a part of the music program, I feel confident. Each group I am a member of has helped me become a better person, whether it be through volunteer work, group activities or just hanging out with friends. I have truly expanded my horizons.”
In the classroom, Izabel is a double major in biology and environmental science. She has a deep passion for nature and regularly volunteers with the Department of Natural Resources fisheries. After graduation, she hopes to work in the same field.
