Most college students juggle classes, campus life and future goals—but few do it quite like Sophia Spahr. A para-swimmer, student body president and aspiring prosthetist, the UOlivet junior is challenging expectations and redefining what’s possible every single day.

Whether she’s diving into the pool for a grueling mile swim, restructuring student government or encouraging classmates in their academic and personal growth, Sophia brings strength, resilience and purpose to everything she does.

A Leader with Vision

Originally from Belmont, Michigan, Sophia chose The University of Olivet for its strong academics and inclusive, tight-knit campus culture. But once she arrived, she quickly found her voice—and a calling to lead.

As student body president, Sophia has led a restructuring of the Student Government Association to better support student clubs and organizations. Her leadership extends beyond the presidency: she’s a proud member of Nu Gamma Xi, where she helps coordinate events that foster campus community, and Phi Epsilon Kappa, where she contributes to fundraising and outreach efforts.

One of her proudest moments? Helping organize a field day for local elementary school students—while also guiding her peers in the Health and Human Performance program through course registration.

“I’ve gained confidence by stepping into roles that pushed me outside of my comfort zone,” she said. “I’ve had to overcome social anxiety, meet new people and run events—each experience has helped me grow and find out who I want to become after graduation.”

Making Waves—Literally

Specializing in events like the mile and 400 IM, she trains and races alongside able-bodied athletes—a challenge she’s faced for most of her life.

“Pushing off the block or from the wall with one foot slows me down,” she explained. “I have to work harder to catch up during races. But I’ve always loved the challenge.”

Despite the physical demands, she credits her team and coach for giving her the support she needs to thrive. “Coming into college, swimming has been a whole new experience,” she said. “Everyone here is so good. But my team has really encouraged me and made me feel like I belong.”

A Calling to Help Others

Sophia’s dreams go far beyond the pool and campus leadership. With a major in exercise science and a minor in social work, she plans to become a prosthetist—a career path deeply connected to her own life experience. Prosthetists are healthcare professionals who design, fit and support the use of artificial limbs, helping individuals regain mobility and independence.

She recalls the moment that set her on this path: “When I was 15 or 16, my prosthetist asked if I’d be willing to talk to someone who had just gone through a similar accident. That conversation stuck with me. I realized I wanted to help others the way I had been helped.”

For Sophia, it’s more than a career—it’s a mission. “I want to show people that anything is possible. As someone who wears a prosthetic, I know how important it is to have support—and to see someone who’s been through it thriving.”

“How Would You Know If You Never Try?”

Sophia’s advice to others is simple—but powerful: “How would you know if you never try?”

With every class, practice and leadership opportunity, Sophia is paving the way for others—demonstrating that limitations are often just stepping stones toward something greater.

At The University of Olivet, Sophia isn’t just building a future in prosthetics. She’s already living her purpose: proving that strength doesn’t always look like speed or ease—it looks like showing up, speaking out, and choosing to try, again and again.
