A record number of 81 high school students accepted The University of Olivet’s invitation to attend its Global Citizen Honors scholarship competition on February 2. The invitation-only event welcomed the best and brightest The University of Olivet applicants to participate in an essay competition for a full-tuition scholarship and other scholarship opportunities, in addition to a day experiencing life as a Comet. The record number of students invited to the event displays the exceptional caliber of the young men and women interested in attending The University of Olivet, as well as the respect the college has for these students’ work ethic.
“Honors Program members are a diverse group of students who enhance the The University of Olivet community and student body,” said Lisa Lehman, assistant vice president for admissions. “We are thrilled to welcome so many of this year‘s best and brightest high school seniors to the Global Citizen Honors scholarship competition. I can already see these students will rise to the challenge of being more and doing good.”
Students hailed from 66 high schools in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Ontario, Canada, and boasted an impressive average grade point average of 3.74, SAT score of 1120, and ACT score of 24.6.
The Global Citizen Honors Program (GCHP) is designed for the student who wishes to continue demonstrating creativity and leadership within the framework of Individual and Social Responsibility. GCHP members are provided opportunities to investigate global, interdisciplinary issues by inquiring into the theories and philosophical underpinnings of complex social issues.
Getting to Know GCHP
In addition to the essay competition, students also learned more about the opportunities within GCHP and their chosen programs of study through interactive breakout sessions with fellow students and faculty members. Programs in the Business Administration, Health and Human Performance, and Natural and Physical Sciences departments garnered the most attention, with students indicating a special interest in business administration, insurance and risk management, pre-professional biology and chemistry, and sociology and psychology. Students also dined in the Kirk Center, experiencing one of the core locations of The University of Olivet student life.
Parent-focused sessions were also built into the event, covering special topics such as financial aid and campus student success resources like tutoring services, internship coordination and seminar. Both students and parents heard from current GCHP members about the benefits of the program, including priority class registration, honors seminar, honors option courses, honors sections of Liberal Arts Core courses, world languages, the honors thesis, a special office space, events throughout the year, honors graduation recognition and even the chance to study at Oxford University in the United Kingdom.
