Caseworkers help at-risk individuals and families such as children from troubled homes, senior citizens and people with serious chronic or terminal illnesses. Caseworkers meet with clients regularly and may make home visits and provide other services based on the needs of their clients.
Child welfare specialists ensure children are protected and secure by making sure they are living in an appropriate environment, receive necessary medical care and have access to schooling. They often have to make tough decisions such as deciding whether a child needs to be removed from their home.
A medical social worker helps patients and their families cope with the social, financial, emotional and psychological hardships related to a diagnosis of a serious, chronic or terminal illness and educates them about patient entitlements, community resources and health insurance coverage. They may also provide counseling advocacy for their patients.
Mental health and substance abuse social workers help clients with mental illnesses or addictions. They provide information on services, such as support groups and 12-step programs, to help clients cope with their illness.
