What is your background in the subject you teach?

I have a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Wayne State University. My research involved making small-molecule nickel catalysts for reductive coupling of carbon dioxide (turning carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into useable fuels). While I was at Wayne State, I also was a graduate teaching assistant and eventually an adjunct teaching faculty, which is how I fell in love with teaching.

What do you like about teaching at Olivet? What do you like about teaching?

I love teaching at Olivet because of the small class sizes and the opportunities I have to connect with my students. I love that at Olivet, I can build relationships with students that extend beyond graduation and into their careers. These ongoing relationships in turn provide current students with internship and career opportunities with alumni. For example, last year I taught a special topics nuclear chemistry course and we were able to take a field trip to the newly opened Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University where we were able to learn about the cutting edge research that they are conducting.

What’s cool about the major or career path your classes are a part of? Why should students consider your field of interest as a career path?

Chemistry is a field that many people don’t realize is as extensive as it is. Chemistry offers careers in many industries such as pharmaceuticals, forensics, automotive, paints, plastics, water treatment, petroleum, electronics, food and drink companies and so much more! Opportunities are endless for our students!

What do you think all students should learn before graduating? What words of wisdom do you have to share?

Students need to learn how to learn from failures. We all strive for success in every aspect of our lives, but how we learn to deal with setbacks really determines the successes we have in the future. Everything is a learning opportunity!

What is an interesting or little-known fact about yourself?

I am a trustee at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #3552 in Charlotte. I am also an avid golfer and try to play as much as I can! My dream vacation is to golf at Pebble Beach.
