For more than five years, The University of Olivet students who are members of Greek societies have been lending a hand to the annual Charlotte Area CROP Hunger Walk. This year will be no exception.

Now in its 32nd year, the walk has raised more than $325,000 for hunger and support efforts for the needy worldwide, and in the local community.

This year, The University of Olivet students are raising money, promoting and working at the Oct. 4 event, which begins at 2 p.m. at Bennett Park (registration begins at 1:30 p.m.).

Student Kaitlyn Simmons, a senior journalism and mass communication major, will be coordinating efforts on behalf of the college. More than a dozen students volunteer to help organize the day’s events and support the walkers.

Part of the Greek societies’ mission at Olivet is service, and this is just one of many efforts that benefit from the students’ work. Students have traditionally supported charity events from Lansing to Port Austin.

There are 11 Greek societies at The University of Olivet. This year, they will help support the 3-2 challenge, in honor of the event’s 32nd year. Donors are being asked to donate $3.20, $32, or more, knowing that 25 percent of funds raised stay in the local community, and benefit SIREN/Eaton Shelter, Helping Hands, Community Dinners and St. Vincent Food Pantry.
