The University of Olivet’s low-brass instructor, Dr. Will Sutton, will be performing a euphonium recital Feb. 3 at 3 p.m. in the Upton Conservatory Recital Hall, 502 S. Main St., Olivet, Michigan.

Sutton, along with pianist Ling Lo, will perform a variety of beautiful and exciting 20th century pieces, including Linkola’s “Euphonium Concerto,” York’s “Prophecies” and Glorieux’s “Elegy” for euphonium and violin, with pianist Ling Lo switching to the violin for this performance. Peter Graham’s “In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen” is a new work that challenges both performers. Movements are entitled “The Time Traveler,” “The Final Problem” and “The Great Race,” taking their inspiration from characters in stories by H.G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle and Jules Verne. The final piece will be a movement, “Mother and Child,” from William Grant Still’s “Suite for Violin and Piano,” transcribed for euphonium by Sutton.

Sutton is an avid teacher and performer of trombone, tuba and euphonium. He has performed with the Grand Rapids and Lansing symphonies, as well as numerous other ensembles across the country. In 2015, Sutton was winner of the MWRTEC Artist Euphonium Solo Competition. He has experienced success competing in the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival, advancing to the semifinals four times. Sutton has performed as a soloist at the Midwest Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference and with area college and university ensembles.

When Sutton is not fulfilling his college and community music school teaching duties, he travels through the Midwest presenting master classes, clinics and recitals to high school and college students. His solo playing can be heard under the Kendor Music, Inc. label.
