The University of Olivet Visual Arts Program will feature artist and new adjunct instructor, Donald W. VanAuken, in its first exhibition of the academic year. Titled “This Must Be the Place,” the exhibition of prints and paintings will be on display from Sept. 3-25, with a gallery talk and opening reception from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Kresge Gallery, located inside The University of Olivet’s Riethmiller Blackman Art Building.

The exhibition and events are free and open to the public; gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

VanAuken’s show includes prints created in The University of Olivet’s own printmaking studio, as well as a new series of paintings. The artist cites his location and environmental surroundings as shaping his creation process. “The use of animals as an allegorical means to describe situations, quandaries and every day experiences,” also play a vital role in his body of work, he says.

VanAuken, who was an assistant professor in art at Ohio University, where he received his M.F.A. in painting, will be teaching courses in printmaking, painting and art history at The University of Olivet starting in the fall.
