Emma Cole, of Berrien Springs, is last year’s GCHP full-tuition scholarship winner.

The University of Olivet will host its fourth annual Global Citizen Honors Program (GCHP) Scholarship Competition Friday, Jan. 30 on campus. More than 90 high school students will compete for a grand prize full tuition scholarship to The University of Olivet, as well as a number of additional scholarship awards throughout the day.

“The University of Olivet is delighted to offer this exclusive scholarship competition,” said Maria Davis, Ph.D., provost and dean of the college. “Every year, it gives us the opportunity to meet incoming students who are exceptionally bright, inquisitive and truly excited about starting their own experience at The University of Olivet.”

Students were selected for the competition based on their academic standing. All of the competitors are high achieving, incoming The University of Olivet freshmen who met specific grade point average and ACT score requirements.

During the event, students will participate in an interview session with faculty and staff members, as well as an essay writing competition. The program also includes information about the GCHP and honors classes at Olivet; a welcome session with President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., and other college officials; and individualized visits with admissions and financial aid representatives. The scholarship winners will be announced in February.

Students admitted to the GCHP at The University of Olivet are provided opportunities to investigate global, interdisciplinary issues by inquiring into the theories and philosophical underpinnings of complex social issues. The program is experiential, requiring members to be involved not only with the problems they are investigating but with each other and the world around them. GCHP is designed for the student who wishes to continue demonstrating creativity and leadership within the framework of individual and social responsibility.
