The University of Olivet to Honor Black History Month with Event Series

The University of Olivet will honor Black History Month throughout February with a number of special events. The month-long observance is a time for reflection and celebration of the achievements and contributions African Americans have made to the history of the United States. This year’s theme is “Celebrating African American Music as the Soundtrack of Liberation.”
Here is the full list of Black History Month guest speakers, excursion trips and campus events:
Monday, Feb. 3
Free Fresh Fades with barber Leo Brown
7-9 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 6
Excursion trip to Michigan State University’s “Slavery to Freedom” series speaker Dr. Kevin R Murriel.
4 p.m. departure from Mott Academic Center
Tuesday, Feb. 11
African American Insurance Leaders: Working in the Insurance Industry
This event features a panel of guest speakers, including alumni and industry leaders.
6 p.m., Mott Auditorium
Wednesday, Feb. 12
Keynote speaker Brenda Nelson with Sounds of O
Nelson is known for her standup comedy and moving presentations about leadership, self-branding and inclusivity. Her work changes lives, allows people to discover their authentic selves and encourages others to reach their greatest potential. She is also a dedicated community volunteer and practices servant leadership.
1:30 p.m., Mott Auditorium
Tuesday, Feb. 18
Taste of Culture Night with special student musical performances. Executive Chef Ben Mayhew will give a demonstration on preparing an authentic soul food dish.
5-6:30 p.m., Kirk Center
Thursday, Feb. 20
Excursion trip to Michigan State University’s “Slavery to Freedom” series speaker April Ryan.
4 p.m. departure Mott Academic Center
Tuesday, Feb. 25
Black History Month Poetry and Creative Arts Night with student musical performances.
7:30 p.m., lower level of Kirk Center
