The University of Olivet students, faculty and staff will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a series of events starting Monday, Jan. 18 and lasting through Thursday, Jan. 21. Events taking place on campus are free and open to the public.
- Students will have the opportunity to participate in MLK Day activities in greater Lansing Monday, Jan. 18. The Office of Student Life will host two bus trips to the city throughout the day. For information or to sign up, call Jason Meadows, associate dean for student life, at (269) 749-7172.
- Activities will recommence on campus Wednesday, Jan. 20 with a bell ringing ceremony in honor of King at noon in the College Square. During this time, the Multicultural Office and Black Student Union (BSU) will present remarks and poems.
- Following the bell ringing ceremony, the college will present a play by actress, speaker and writer E.P. McKnight and Nikao Imani Productions. The event, which begins at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mott Auditorium, is co-sponsored by the college’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Betsy Dole Women’s Resource Center and Multicultural Office.
- A musical tribute in honor of King will take place Thursday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. in Mott Auditorium. The concert will feature internationally renowned recording artist Kimmie Horne, as well as the Al McKenzie Trio, 496 West and J.L. Speakz. The public is encouraged to join the The University of Olivet community for this free event.
