Two The University of Olivet student-athletes received Athlete of the Week recognitions from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) for their dedication and performance as a teammate and competitor.
Sophomore Ashley Folleth has been named the MIAA Women’s Golfer of the Week. Ashley tied for third-place in the player standings with a two-round score of 158 strokes at the Comets’ home tournament, the Kyle Campbell Invitational Sept. 8-9 at the Medalist Golf Course. Her first round score of 78 was a career-best for a par 72 course and included three birdies and 10 pars. The performance helped Olivet edge MIAA foe Hope College by one stroke in the team standings for a second-place finish.
“Ashley has been really focused this fall,” said Olivet head women’s golf coach Bill Maas. “The work that she has put into her golf game over the summer has resulted in great rounds to start the season. I only expect her to improve as we play more competitive rounds over the course of the next two months.”
Ashley and her teammates return to the course Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17, at the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Invitational.
Freshman Katie Rush earned the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer. As the starting right back, Katie helped the Comets open their MIAA schedule with two wins last week. On Sept. 6, the Comets defeated Saint Mary’s College, 4-0, and Katie even held the Belles’ leading scorer to zero goals and four shots. Katie then helped Olivet beat Alma College, 4-1, on Sept. 9.
“Katie has stepped in as a freshman and earned her position as our starting right back,” said head women’s soccer coach Sarah Maracani. “She gives 110 percent every time she steps onto the field. Last week, Katie did a great job at holding the MIAA and national offensive player of the week to zero goals and limited shots. She also plays a big role in starting our attack from the right side and she did a great job with that. Overall, our backline played fantastic defense and Katie was a standout with her efforts.”
