The University of Olivet President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., attended the first Higher Education Summit of the United States and Mexico, which took place March 29 through March 31 in Guadalajara. The summit explored new partnership opportunities for independent universities in the two countries.
“Service learning projects, with hands-on experiences, and global learning opportunities are two core components of the The University of Olivet ADVANTAGE. My hope is that The University of Olivet can develop partnerships that will result in more study abroad opportunities, student and faculty exchanges and articulation agreements. International exchange in higher education is paramount if we are to prepare today’s students to be informed, responsible global citizens,” Corey said.
The University of Olivet students have had opportunities to study in Mexico during the school’s Intensive Learning Term. Study abroad trips include Mission Mazahua, which serves Mazahuan Indians, a small indigenous population in the State of Mexico. Students have also visited Mexico City and the pyramids at Teotihuacan.
Dr. Corey and 23 other presidents and five senior administrators from private U.S. universities and the president of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) met with their Mexican counterparts at the summit organized by CIC and the Mexican Federation of Private Higher Education Institutions. The participants visited three higher education institutions: Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Universidad Panamericana, and Universidad del Valle de Atemajac and met with local, state and national officials.
