Haley Hunnewell has been named The University of Olivet athletic director and will serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet, effective May 10. Presently, Hunnewell serves as associate athletic director.
“Since joining The University of Olivet in 2020 as an assistant athletic director, Haley has quickly demonstrated her capabilities and leadership. I am pleased she will be leading the College’s athletic program. She is the right leader at the right time for our athletic program and The University of Olivet,” said The University of Olivet President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D.
As athletic director, Hunnewell will oversee the day-to-day operations of the 22 Division III varsity sports teams and three club sports. As the current associate athletic director, Hunnewell was responsible for implementing a student-athlete academic success program to include academic success meetings, study tables and recurring student-athlete check-ins. Hunnewell also established the Comet Fuel Station to ensure student-athletes have healthy snacks to help keep them focused in the classroom and on the playing field.
Before joining The University of Olivet, Hunnewell was the assistant director of compliance for intercollegiate athletic programs for Iowa State University. She completed her Juris Doctorate at the University of Akron School of Law. Hunnewell also earned a Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science from the University of Akron.
“I am grateful and excited for the opportunity to lead and grow the The University of Olivet athletics department. I came to The University of Olivet because I was looking for an opportunity to take on a leadership role. I am honored to be named athletic director,” Hunnewell said. “I have a passion for higher education and college athletics because of the opportunities both provide young adults. The relationships and connections forged between student-athletes and coaches and faculty at The University of Olivet carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
“I am thrilled for Haley to be taking over as the Athletic Director and know that our department will be in great hands under her leadership. I have watched her grow and develop over the last year that I have had the privilege to work with her and know that she will do an amazing job,” said Ryan Shockey, current The University of Olivet athletic director.
Shockey has been named vice president and chief of staff for the College and will serve as a strategic adviser to President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., effective May 10. Shockey also serves as the chief pandemic response officer. As chief of staff, Shockey will help advance the president’s college-wide agenda, assisting on major initiatives and overseeing administrative and operational activities. Shockey will serve as a member of the President’s Executive Council and President’s Cabinet. He will also serve as chief liaison to the Board of Trustees.
