The University of Olivet was ranked third in Best’s Review national survey of leading college insurance and risk management programs. The survey has been conducted biennially since 2018, and The University of Olivet has earned a top-three spot in the past two surveys. This year, 316 industry professionals from around the country participated in the survey, casting a total of 399 votes.

Thomas Humphreys, CPCU, CLU, ChFC, CIC, The University of Olivet assistant professor of insurance and risk management and director of the program, said, “We are very honored to be recognized by Best’s Review as an institution that stands out in the discipline of risk management and insurance. As one of the smallest schools by enrollment in the ranking, the ability for faculty to work with our students in small class sizes, and many times one-on-one, really sets our students up to gain knowledge and experience that larger schools can’t provide.”

The University of Olivet has historically been one of the smallest schools included in the ranking, especially among the top contenders. Recruiters and industry executives who participated in the survey noted The University of Olivet’s ability to prepare and place students for jobs at top insurers. In fact, 85% of survey participants who casted votes for The University of Olivet were hiring managers.

“The University of Olivet [provides] opportunities to earn professional designations, requires internships in the industry, [offers] faculty with extensive industry experience, explores current insurance issues and prepares students to attain executive positions through effective interactions with others,” said Kim Rathbone, managing partner for the Rathbone Group LLC, as quoted in Best’s Review’s publication of the survey results.

The University of Olivet’s insurance and risk management program has a proven record of excellence. Every student in the program completes an internship and graduates have 99% job placement rate in the field. Olivet is home to the Alpha Alpha chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, which is regularly ranked among the best chapters in the nation for student engagement and experiences.  Further, The University of Olivet offers a unique minor in insurance claims investigation, noted as the only program of its kind in the region. In addition, the College’s Master of Business Administration Program offers professional students a convenient, online program taught by experienced faculty members. Graduate students can tailor their education with a general concentration or specialized concentrations in insurance or enterprise risk management.

“The University of Olivet insurance and risk management program is truly remarkable in the experience students are provided, in addition to the education and knowledge they gain,” said senior Zoie Walters, AINS, CIC, CRM, insurance and risk management and financial planning double major at The University of Olivet. “The professional development, networking opportunities and real-world application of skills prepares students to be competitive candidates as we enter the industry. Students can participate in our nationally-recognized chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, work toward industry credentials, such as the AINS, CIC and CRM designations and Producer Licensing, and engage with professors who have incredible firsthand industry experience to share. There is no one thing that makes Olivet’s program deserving of this ranking, it is a collection of all the things that make Olivet unique.”
