The University of Olivet Gospel Choir (OCGC) is pleased to announce its first-ever Junior Gospel Choir Competition Saturday, March 19 on campus. Area choirs comprised of singers aged 6 to 19 are invited to participate in the event, which is free to register. Lunch will be offered at a reduced cost of $4 per person. Registration ends March 5 and is limited to the first 10 choirs to sign up.
Choristers will spend the day attending two 30-minute seminars in vocal and performance technique with The University of Olivet music faculty as well as musicians from the community. They will also get a chance to tour campus with OCGC students, eat lunch in the Kirk Center Dining Hall and learn more about the gospel music program at Olivet. The event will culminate with a singing competition before a panel of judges, with prizes consisting of trophies and $500 (first place), $250 (second place), and $100 (third place) for the top choirs.
“The OCGC is so excited to host what is sure to be fun-filled, annual event,” said La’Rae Trice, The University of Olivet Gospel Choir director. “These young singers will have the opportunity to travel and gain exposure to The University of Olivet’s music program, while also developing their craft with some of the best music professors and students in the state of Michigan. In addition, OCGC students will gain valuable experience sharing their talents and expertise with the junior choirs.”
The public is invited to attend as part of the audience for the competition. Admission is free, and donations are welcome for those who wish to help the OCGC offset the costs of the competition.
Check-in for the daylong event will begin at 10 a.m., with the competition beginning at 4 p.m. For more information or to help support the OCGC Junior Choir Competition, call Trice at (269) 986-4333.
