The University of Olivet is proud to announce its designation as a 2018 Top 10 Gold Level Military Friendly® School by Victory Media. OC ranked third in the category of private schools not offering a doctorate degree. Military Friendly® serves as a standard to measure an organization’s commitment, effort and success in creating sustainable and meaningful benefit for the military community. The Military Friendly® School list is specifically designed to equip veterans, dependents, active duty and other military personnel with the ability to easily and efficiently navigate their educational opportunities.
“My transition from the military to becoming a student was not always easy,” Navy veteran Michael Strauss ’17 said. “The support of my friends, family and wife, as well as my adviser, KayDee Perry, and Leslie Sullivan (The University of Olivet’s registrar and designated correspondent with the Department of Veterans Affairs), helped me get well on my way to graduating and becoming the person I want to be. The University of Olivet has given me the knowledge and tools to be successful, and inspired me to live a life based on hard work, service to humanity and acceptance. I will always cherish my time spent at this institution and forever remain proud to be Comet.”
Institutions competed for the elite Military Friendly® School title by completing a survey of more than 100 questions covering 10 categories, including military support on campus, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies. Survey responses were scored against benchmarks across these key indicators of success.
The Military Friendly® Schools designation is awarded to the top colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success both in the classroom and after graduation. The methodology used for making the Military Friendly® Schools list has changed the student-veteran landscape to one much more transparent, and has played a significant role over the past seven years in capturing and advancing best practices to support military students across the country.
In addition, The University of Olivet was also recognized as a Gold Level Veteran Friendly School for 2017-18 from the State of Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA). MVAA’s Veteran-Friendly School Program recognizes academic institutions of higher learning committed to supporting the needs of student-veterans and dependents. The University of Olivet has been named to the highest level status of institutions that offer veteran-centric services and programs.
Supporting Our Veterans
The University of Olivet recognizes and honors the sacrifices that U.S. service members make in the defense of our nation. The college is dedicated to assisting veterans, guardsman, reservists and others receiving U.S. military benefits in making a successful transition to the college community. One resource OC provides is a scholarship for veterans, active military members and their families equal to 50 percent of tuition costs. In addition, the student services office assists veterans, active duty military students and dependents of veterans with certification, registration and financial aid. Further, the campus is home to a support organization for veteran and active duty students and their families.
“I have always felt so welcome at Olivet. From the academic advisers to support groups and even other students, every step of my way I have had someone there to make me feel comfortable, answer my questions or help in any way that I needed,” Navy veteran Stacey Hapner ’17 said.
