The University of Olivet to commemorate 2017 Martin Luther King Jr. Day with events

The University of Olivet students, faculty and staff will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a series of events on Wednesday, Jan. 18 and Thursday, Jan. 19. Events taking place on campus are free and open to the public.

Bryant Williams ’00, Martin Luther King Jr. program keynote speaker, Thursday, Jan. 19 at The University of Olivet.

The program will begin on Jan. 18 with a bell ringing ceremony in honor of King at noon in the College Square. During this time, the Multicultural Office and Black Student Union (BSU) will present remarks and poems.

Following the bell ringing ceremony, the college will present a lecture and symposium featuring Bryant Williams, a 2000 graduate of Olivet. Williams will present “Being Black in a Green Industry” at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Mott Auditorium, also sponsored by the Multicultural Office.

Another presentation will take place on Wednesday in Mott Auditorium at 3 p.m. Mark Bishop of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights will speak on hate crimes in Michigan.

The second annual musical tribute in honor of King will take place Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Mott Auditorium. The concert will feature performances by Al McKenzie, Angela Davis, Zakiya Williams, 496 West and the The University of Olivet Gospel Choir. The public is encouraged to join the The University of Olivet community for this free event.
