Dear OC Community,
Happy first week of spring! What a week it’s been — sunny skies, flowers are blooming, warm breezes, T-shirts in place of parkas and lunch picnics on the lawn with friends. Mother nature has a way of reminding us that beauty is all around, even amid a pandemic. Take out your earbuds, put away your phone, stop in the Square, look up and take in all of the beauty that surrounds you — on the ground, in the trees, in the sky … and in the smiling eyes and faces of your OC family.
This week’s communication covers the following topics:

  1. Kind, Caring and Understanding
  2. COVID-19 Vaccine — Things to Know
  3. OC Staff Wellness Session Reminder
Kind, Caring and Understanding

The pandemic — and its duration — is something none of us ever imagined happening in our lifetime. We are all weary. We are all frustrated. We sometimes feel alone. We all want things to go “back to normal.” Positivity and optimism can be challenging to rouse when feeling drained emotionally. It’s also easy to forget that others feel the same way — or are having a worse day than us.
Springtime is about renewal. Now is the perfect time to renew our OC CARES promise to be kind, caring and understanding to the people around us, whether it’s a daily interaction in a classroom or a chance encounter with a stranger in the grocery store. Just as others don’t know the worries and burdens each of us is carrying, we do not know the struggles others face.
One kind word can change someone’s entire day. Please consider your words and actions when interacting with others, especially your OC family members (students, faculty and staff). It’s that simple, and it’s the responsible thing to do.
We will get through this together.

COVID-19 Vaccine — Things to Know

Beginning April 5, 2021, all Michiganders age 16 years and older are eligible to receive a free COVID-19 vaccine by appointment. Watch for helpful information and resources in upcoming OC CARES communications on when and how to register for your vaccine.
Why Be Vaccinated
Vaccines are one of the most effective tools to protect your health and prevent disease. Vaccines work with your body’s natural defenses to be ready to fight the virus if you are exposed.
Vaccines are Safe
The U.S. vaccine safety system makes sure that all vaccines are as safe as possible. All the COVID-19 vaccines have gone through the same safety tests and meet the same standards as any other vaccines produced through the years. A system is in place across the entire country that allows the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to watch for safety issues.
Studies show that COVID-19 vaccines are very effective at keeping you from getting COVID-19. Experts also think that getting a COVID-19 vaccine may help keep you from getting seriously ill, even if you do get COVID-19. It’s also important to note that the vaccines cannot give you the disease itself.

Staff Wellness Session Reminder

A faculty session will be scheduled for a later date.

“Seems to me it ain’t the world that’s so bad but what we’re doing to it, and all I’m saying is: see what a wonderful world it would be if only we’d give it a chance. Love, baby – love. That’s the secret.”Louis Armstrong
