FDA Fully Approves Pfizer Vaccination in Fight Against COVID-19
On Aug. 23, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration fully approved the first COVID-19 vaccine. The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine will now be marketed as Comirnaty (koe-mir’-na-tee), for the prevention of COVID-19 in individuals 16 years of age and older. Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, M.D. said, “The public can be very confident that this vaccine meets the high standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing
quality the FDA requires of an approved product. While millions of people have already safely received COVID-19 vaccines, we recognize that for some, the FDA approval of a vaccine may now instill additional confidence to get vaccinated. Today’s milestone puts us one step closer to altering the course of this pandemic in the U.S.” Overall, during the evaluation period the vaccine was 91% effective in preventing COVID-19. Masking Dos and Don’ts Reminder

Thank you for being responsible, understanding, kind, flexible and patient with the current masking requirement. Currently, all students, faculty and staff are required to wear a mask when in indoor public spaces.
  1.  The mask must cover both the mouth and nose, at the same time and at all times.
  2. The mask should remain on and over the mouth and nose when talking. Do not remove the mask in class when speaking. If you are worried you will not be heard, speak louder than you normally do and be sure to articulate your words clearly.

What is a Public Indoor Space? Below are examples of when masks must be worn. When in doubt, please put on a mask and then ask.
Mask required in indoor spaces where people are stationary or tend to congregate, including the following:

  • Residence Halls – common areas including lobbies, game rooms, computer lounges, laundry rooms and hallways
  • All buildings – classrooms and labs, reception areas, lobbies, hallways and stairwells
  • Burrage Library and Roznowski Learning Commons
  • Kirk Center and Starbucks Cafe – when not seated or eating and drinking
  • Indoor social/student engagement events
  • Public meeting or event when 6-feet physical distancing is not possible to maintain

Mask not required in uncrowded indoor spaces and outdoors, including the following:

  • Private living space when alone, with a roommate or friends
  • When eating or drinking
  • In a private office or meeting space where 6-feet physical distancing can be maintained and all parties agree to no masking
  • When walking directly to/from a restroom in a residence hall
  • When engaging in physical activity or exercise
  • Outdoors

No appointment is necessary, however, to save yourself some time, you are encouraged to make an appointment with BEDHD in advance. Scan the QR code or click here to schedule an appointment.

  • After getting a COVID-19 vaccine, you will be monitored on-site for at least 15 minutes.
  • It takes time for your body to build protection after any vaccination. Therefore, you are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after your second dose of the Pfizer vaccine or two weeks after you receive the J&J one-shot vaccine.
  • Pain, redness and swelling in the arm where you get the shot is common.
  • Other common side effects include one or more of the following: tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever or nausea.
  • Side effects are normal signs that your body is building protection and should go away within a few days.
  • Click here for CDC information, including myths and facts, benefits of the vaccine, effectiveness, possible side effects and more.
