The University of Olivet celebrated its graduates on May 20. The Class of 2023 includes 196 traditional undergraduates, criminal justice degree completion, RN-BSN and Master of Business Administration students.
Destinee Hawkins ’23 represented the Class of 2023 as the class speaker. Destinee is from Kalamazoo and graduated with a degree in psychology with a minor in social work. She has been honored with awards for her academics, multicultural leadership and excellence in inclusion. While at Olivet, Destinee has been a student in the Global Citizen Honors Program, is a President’s Leadership Fellow and is graduating with honors. She has also served as president of the Hiram Archer Student Success Academy (HASSA) and was a member of Black Student Union. She said, “I always thought it was funny that our mascot is a comet because a literal comet is a ball of ice that’s covered in dust that continues orbiting around the sun. Only when the comet is close enough to the sun does it start to speed up. The sun is the source that charges it. As I look out at this crowd, I see Comets that have been charged up, who have found their sun at Olivet, and I encourage you to keep your piece of sunshine for a recharge as you walk in the world. I encourage you to be that sunshine when someone else needs a recharge. Sometimes we need to know we can depend on others.”
