The University of Olivet Announces the Election of Three New Members to Its Board of Trustees

Today, The University of Olivet announced the appointment of three new members to its Board of Trustees. The Honorable Thomas E. Brennan, Jr., J.D., retired judge of the 55th District Court in Mason, Ingham County, State of Michigan; AJ Jones, N.D., CEO of Compliance One Group; and Justin Klamerus ’99, M.D., president of Karmanos Cancer Hospital & Network.

“I am very pleased to have Judge Brennan, Dr. Jones and Dr. Klamerus join the Board of Trustees,” President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., said. “At The University of Olivet, we are fortunate to have dedicated alumni and friends of the college who are strongly committed to the institution and its mission. These individuals will play a tremendous role in helping lead The University of Olivet toward its future goals. I thank each of them for contributing their time and talent to the advancement of the college.”

Honorable Thomas E. Brennan, Jr., J.D.

The Honorable Thomas E. Brennan, Jr., J.D., served as a judge on the 55th District Court in Mason, Ingham County, State of Michigan, from January 1981 through December 2004 and retired after 26 years of public service. He handled small claims, landlord-tenant matters, civil matters under $25,000, traffic citations, drunk driving, other misdemeanors and felony preliminary examinations among other duties both jurisdictional and administrative.

Brennan is currently conducting facilitations, mediations and arbitrations on a freelance basis. In addition, he selectively represents individuals and businesses in need of legal services.

Brennan was first elected to the bench in November of 1980 and re-elected in 1986, 1992 and 1998. He served as Chief Judge of the Court from 1987 through 1990 and again from 1995 through 2004. In 2002, Brennan was a candidate for the Michigan Court of Appeals.

Prior to his judicial duties, Brennan was elected to the Ingham County Board of Commissioners in 1978 for a two-year term. Simultaneously, he practiced law as a partner in the firm of Klug & Brennan, P.C.

Brennan is an active member of the Ingham County Bar Association, and is a founding board member of the newly formed Catholic Bar Association of America. He is heavily involved in the community, and even created and organized Lansing’s inaugural Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure in 2005, and continues today in honor of his two sons who both suffer from Type I Diabetes.

Brennan received a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University in 1974, majoring in criminal justice, and a Juris Doctor from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing in 1978.

AJ Jones, N.D.

AJ Jones, N.D., is CEO of Compliance One Group, a code compliance firm dedicated to compliance preparedness and responsiveness. Bringing over 40 years of forward‐thinking management experience to his role, Jones contributes to organizational growth and corporate development as the team educates, directs and guides clients on best practices in the areas of life, safety and environment of care.

Before joining Compliance One Group, Jones served as Grace Health’s president and CEO, retiring in July 2017. As the leader of the Battle Creek health center since 1992, he oversaw the center’s move and the addition of a dedicated women’s health center facility, which opened in 2014. The center saw almost 32,000 patients in 2016.

During his career at Grace Health, Jones worked with community leaders to address health care disparities in Calhoun County. His many accomplishments during his career at Grace Health included facility designing and construction, operational redesigning, establishing and maintaining financial viability, building effective teams and maintaining high performance standards.

With a focus on increasing quality of patient care and access to medical information needed to improve health, Jones formed countless partnerships with various community leaders and organizations and serves on the board of Southwest Michigan Rehab Foundation Board and The University of Olivet Nursing Advisory Board.

Jones holds a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University and a master’s degree and a doctorate degree in nursing from Rush University, College of Nursing.

Justin Klamerus ’99, M.D.

Justin Klamerus ’99, M.D., is president of the Karmanos Cancer Hospital & Network, part of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Klamerus oversees all operations at Karmanos’ treatment locations in Detroit and Farmington Hills, in addition to the Karmanos Cancer Network, which includes 14 cancer centers and nine radiation centers located throughout Michigan. Klamerus also serves as associate professor of oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

After the acquisition of Karmanos by McLaren Health Care in 2014, Karmanos became the largest cancer research and provider network in Michigan. Dr. Klamerus has served in various roles since joining the Karmanos staff in early 2014, including executive vice president/chief quality officer and associate center director for Community Oncology.

Klamerus is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Steering Committee of the Michigan Oncology Quality Consortium.

Klamerus received a bachelor’s degree from The University of Olivet and a Doctor of Medicine from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine at The Ohio State University. Klamerus later attended Johns Hopkins University where he completed a fellowship in Medical Oncology. Dr. Klamerus earned a Master of Medical Management at the Heinz College of Carnegie Mellon University. In 2017, Klamerus completed the Health Management Academy’s General Electric Fellowship Program for Physician Executives. He is board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine.
