Happy New Year! As the The University of Olivet community enters 2017 with the fresh start of a new semester, we are reminded of the potential that comes with each and every new beginning. For instance, these highlights from 2016 reflect the achievements and growth students, staff and faculty at Olivet have experienced in just one year.
2016 HIGHLIGHTS
Members of the The University of Olivet Black Student Union (BSU) hosted a water drive in Jan. 2016 for the city of Flint which was facing a major water crisis due to lead contamination.
During his Founders’ Day keynote speech, Dr. Craig Bailey ’01 said choosing The University of Olivet saved his life. He is now one of the youngest primary care physicians in Detroit.
The University of Olivet Board of Trustees voted unanimously to renew the contract of President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D. With this extension, Corey will continue to serve as president of The University of Olivet through 2021.
Officials from The University of Olivet and the Lansing Promise announced a partnership that will provide significant assistance to students from the Lansing School District.
The University of Olivet was ranked number 11 on the Business Insurance Directory of Risk Management and Insurance Schools which lists the nation’s top colleges for those interested in risk management and insurance careers.
A school record of 133 The University of Olivet student-athletes were named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll for 2015-16.
The University of Olivet Criminal Justice Program partnered with the Calhoun County Prosecutor and Battle Creek Police Department to launch a cold case course.
The University of Olivet welcomed one of its largest entering classes in the last decade, as more than 400 new students arrived to campus for Move-In Day on Aug. 26.
Mike Sherman ’17 delivered a special student response during the 2016 Opening Convocation. His words challenged his audience to “be more and to do good.”
The University of Olivet and Lansing School District partnered to jump start the next generation of insurance professionals.
The Comets claimed the outright MIAA conference title for the first time in school history since 1974, and back-to-back MIAA championships for the first time since 1913 and 1914. The University of Olivet football team also played in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championships.
The University of Olivet is designated as a veteran-friendly school for 2017 by both the Michigan Veteran Affairs Agency (MVAA) and Victory Media’s Military Friendly® program for outstanding service to student-veterans.
The University of Olivet announced Cultivating Women Leaders: Embracing Our Inner Strength, an annual event for young women as part of the Presidential Women’s Leadership Initiative, chaired by Presidential Spouse Traci Corey.
