Sports aficionados, rejoice. The University of Olivet offers a program for those who’d rather call the shots behind the scenes than on the playing field. Olivet’s sports recreation management program prepares students for careers as athletic team managers, college athletic administrators, agents, sports event planners and more.
The program focuses greatly on professional development, helping students prepare for the future.
“We try to give students a well-rounded variety of experiences to put on their resume to make their mark for the future,” said Charles Crowley, Ph.D., associate professor of sports recreation management.
To prepare students for the field, professors bring in professionals to show students what they need to be successful.
Dr. Crowley stresses that professors with real-world experience are happy to share their advice with students, giving them “first-hand knowledge about the field and making sure they work tirelessly to get their own experiences.”
Senior Kris Wells is appreciative of the professional development within the sports recreation management program.
“I have learned a lot about the professional side of my major,” Kris said. “I’ve learned things like how to dress, conduct business, and get out and network first-hand with industry professionals.”
Junior Sofiya Stumpos adds that the program has helped grow her confidence both personally and professionally.
“My major has prepared me for the professional world by giving me the confidence to believe in myself,” Sofiya said. “My professors have guided and prepared me effectively for my future profession. I feel very strongly that my professors in this field believe in me, which in turn has helped me believe in myself.”
Kris is also excited for the future of the program.
“Dr. Crowley is adding tons of new and exciting classes to our major, and Nancy Van Hoozier, associate professor of health and human performance, is an expert professor,” Kris said. “Together, these two are growing our program to new heights.”
