2018 is almost here, and with it comes New Year’s resolutions. For college students, there is always room to push yourself to learn something new, help someone in need or leave your comfort zone, and setting goals is a great way to do that! Check out five recommendations to inspire you to set your own New Year’s Resolutions in 2018.

1. Be MORE. Stay focused on your classes and your future. Strive to do your best in each and every class, and don’t forget about career preparation in 2018. Attend a job fair, purchase a well-fitted suit, or make a point to apply to at least three jobs or internships this year. It’s easy to get caught up with exams, athletic practices and campus events, but keeping a future-oriented mindset will help you prepare for life after graduation.

2. Do GOOD. Help someone in need during 2018. The opportunities to perform service are countless, especially at The University of Olivet. If you’re looking for a few ideas, reach out to Carrie Jacob, OC’s community service coordinator, at cjacob@uolivet.edu to learn about upcoming service projects and even service trips. Not only is giving of your time or money rewarding, it can be fun too!

3. Develop leadership skills. Step up and lead on campus this year. Clubs, honor societies, athletic teams and other campus organizations have tons of opportunities to play a leadership role. You’re sure to practice valuable communication skills, feel empowered and even learn something about yourself – plus, it’ll look great on a resume!

4. Get healthy. It might be a cliché New Year’s resolution, but let’s face it: we could all live a healthier lifestyle. Make it a point to eat your veggies and get enough sleep every night. Or, get your homework done early to cut back on stress and anxiety induced by procrastination.

5. Leave your comfort zone. The University of Olivet is not the place to be if you want to play it safe or hide in the back of a lecture hall. Leave your comfort zone in 2018 – not just once, but as many times as you can. Travel to a new city, or even a new country, try out for a sport (it can be an intramural!), give a presentation, or pledge to a Greek organization just to name a few ideas!

When setting a New Year’s resolution or any kind of goal, it’s important to keep it attainable and create a plan of action to succeed. That way, you won’t become discouraged or lose motivation to complete your goals. As President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., always says, the most beneficial learning happens outside of your comfort zone. Leave yours today.
