Comet Student-Athletes, Comet Fans, & Members of the The University of Olivet Community:
We regret to announce that in response to the COVID-19 virus, The University of Olivet and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) have cancelled all college sanctioned athletics for the remainder to the 2019-2020 academic year, effective immediately. This cancellation is for all traditional and non-traditional sports seasons that involve athletic-related activity, meetings and practices.
For Comet student-athletes and their families, this is difficult news to receive. This decision was made with your best interests in mind. We simply cannot afford to put your health and wellbeing above competition. The University of Olivet and the athletic program are here to support you and your college success in the weeks and months ahead. Do not hesitate to reach out to coaching and athletic staff for support. There remain details still to be determined and coaches will be in communication with their student-athletes in the coming days to ensure you are doing well and to discuss next steps as a team.
For Comet seniors, words hardly express our regret that your season is ending prematurely. We and so many fans across the Comet family appreciate the hard work and dedication you put into being a Comet. The University of Olivet Athletics is better today because of the foundation and legacy you have left behind.
It was announced earlier today that the NCAA has taken action, effective immediately, through the Division III Management and Presidents Council to work with institutions on providing blanket waivers for student-athletes participating in spring sports. The two waivers consist of: 1) Waive the use of a season of participation for all student-athletes in spring sports. If an institution continues or re-starts its season the waiver would still exist. 2) Waive the use of the spring semester towards the limit of 10 semesters/15 quarters, regardless of whether they used a season. Athletic staff will be monitoring this closely and how it applies to Comet student-athletes. For eligibility questions please contact the athletic department staff.
Again, to our student-athletes, thank you for your commitment to The University of Olivet. As we learn in athletic competition, together we can and will get through challenging times. This is one of those times.
