Travon Tatum is a senior majoring in journalism and mass communication. He is a member of the Mu Omega Pi fraternity, a President’s Leadership Institute Fellow, a member of Olivet’s record-breaking 4×100 relay team, and is the official DJ for The University of Olivet and athletics.
For a student who participates in numerous activities that place him squarely in the limelight, he plans to pursue a career behind the scenes. “I want to go into the television field or maybe become a movie editor,” said Tatum. “I like taking raw video footage and turning it into something amazing.”
In fact, Tatum favors his video production classes. He also likes his major’s weekly seminar, “…because they always bring in guest speakers who relate to us,” he added. “Some of whom have even helped students land their dream jobs.”
Tatum appreciates all his faculty members, but counts Joanne Williams, associate professor of journalism and mass communication, as one of his favorites. Taking the time to help her students succeed, no matter what, is what endears Williams to Tatum most.
”Travon is quite an achiever. He knows what he is responsible for and he gets things done,” said Williams. “I can see him directing others to success. He’s the type of person who shuns the spotlight but deserves it nonetheless.”
So how does Tatum manage his hectic academic and personal schedule?
“A big part of living stress free throughout college is time management,” he concluded. “Once you learn how to manage your time well, everything will go smoothly and your experience at The University of Olivet will be fun.”
