Rising junior Benjamin Porter is a media production and communication major from Kalkaska, Michigan. He’s a member of the football team and a recent graduate of the President’s Leadership Institute. The University of Olivet’s similarity to his hometown gave Ben the confidence to thrive at college.

As he continues to grow and develop during his college career, Ben has developed positive relationships with his coaches, professors, teammates and the athletic staff. “All of my coaches, professors and advisors on campus do a great job of supporting me daily. They understand what I can do and always find time to help me with anything I need,” Ben said.

As a media production and communication major, building these relationships has come easy to Ben. “I love writing and media, as well as communicating with others and meeting new people,” he said. “I enjoy public speaking and greatly value the importance of communication in our world today.” Ben hopes to work in sports journalism, coaching or athletic administration in his career.

To Ben, growth through relationships is what makes The University of Olivet so special. “The relationships I have built here in Olivet are outstanding and are something that can’t be done in many other places,” Ben said. “The personal connections I have with many members of the college and the community are greatly beneficial as I strive to achieve my goals. If others want to accomplish their dreams, they should come here to do it.”

Recognized for his efforts as an exceptional member and leader of our campus community, Ben was invited to be part of the President’s Leadership Institute (PLI). Ben learned leadership skills through PLI and participated in a project that let the PLI Fellows put leadership into action. “My group’s project was to identify the most productive forms of communication throughout the Olivet community and figure out how the college can improve communication in the most efficient way possible,” Ben said. “It was a great way to experience working with others while also learning the values and importance of quality leadership.”

When asked how this experience will support him in the future, Ben spoke about the importance of leadership in everything we do. “Being able to learn as much as I did through PLI and to do so from such knowledgeable people has provided me with information and experiences that I am greatly looking forward to using in the future, wherever my leadership roles may be. Although ‘leadership’ can be a somewhat relative term, its importance will never change.”

Ben is thankful for the opportunities and support that PLI and The University of Olivet have provided him in his college career. “I am just under halfway done with my time here. I look forward to my future here as a student and am extremely grateful to everyone who has helped me so much up to this point.”
