I graduated in May of 2019, with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. After graduation, I enrolled in an alternative route to certification (ARC) program that allowed me to obtain an interim teaching certificate. This led me to my job now, a sixth grade teacher and freshman volleyball coach at Grand Ledge Public Schools. I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in today without my time at The University of Olivet, the professors and the friends I met along the way on a wonderful small campus.
During my time at Olivet, I played two years of volleyball, joined my sorority, Sigma Beta, worked multiple on-campus jobs and earned an individualized education. I grew up in a very small farming community, which influenced my decision to continue my education at a small school. The first time I walked on campus, I felt a sense of comfort and a little bit of home. The fact that I wouldn’t be just a number in my classes was so important and later became true as my largest class was around 30 students, while my smallest class had about five. The professors in the Health and Human Performance Department truly want you to succeed and will provide you with the knowledge and experience to do so. The professors understand the stress of college and will work with you as you find your way, which is something you don’t find everywhere.
As an alumna, my advice to future students is to work hard in your classes, but don’t forget to give yourself a break sometimes — Tim’s Pizza downtown has some great ice cream! Get out of your comfort zone, meet new people and try new things. Always set multiple alarms — Professor Perry will literally call you if you miss her class. But most importantly, cherish your time there. It will go by in the blink of an eye. The University of Olivet will always be your home-away-from-home.
