In 2012, I graduated from The University of Olivet with an undergraduate degree in criminal justice. I chose to attend OC when I began searching for a college that had just the right balance of sports and academics. I had been on multiple campus visits at other colleges and universities, but something just felt right when I visited Olivet. The small town feeling really drew me in, and I couldn’t see myself anywhere else. During my time at Olivet, I was a part of the wrestling team. This has always been and probably always will be the highlight of my life up to this point. I made great friends and will cherish those memories for the rest of my life.
Currently, I am a police officer with Wayne State University in the heart of downtown Detroit. I am assigned to the K-9 unit and currently work with the two best partners I could ask for — their names are Bruno and Wolverine. Bruno is a 3-year-old German Shepherd who specializes in narcotics detection, tracking, criminal apprehension and much more. Together, we have recovered large amounts of narcotics and have apprehended multiple suspects who have fled from police. Wolverine is a 5-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer who specializes in explosives detection. We have been involved in countless precautionary explosive sweeps of nearly every event in Detroit, including Red Wngs, Pistons and Lions games, concerts, fireworks and even presidential visits. We have had the opportunity to meet many celebrities and business leaders like Kid Rock, Dan Gilbert, Mike Illitch and the former president of Mexico, Vicente Fox. It has been a great experience, and I consider it the greatest honor of my life. If you are ever attending an event downtown, you may just see us, and if so, stop by and say hi! I am also in my first year of graduate school working toward my master’s degree in criminal justice.
My advice for new students at OC is simple: work hard and chose a path that will lead to a career that can offer you new and exciting experiences. Cherish every moment that you get to spend at Olivet. Four years may seem like a long time, but as soon as you know it, they will be over. During your time, you will gain new friends from all over, and you will make memories that will be with you well past your time at The University of Olivet. Get to know your professors. To this day, I still have conversations with some of my professors and even see them at events downtown once in a while. The University of Olivet is truly like no other college out there. It is all too true in life that you do not know what you have until it is gone. Good luck in your journey, and GO COMETS!
