I am a 2019 graduate of The University of Olivet. I majored in criminal justice with a concentration in corrections. During my time at Olivet, I was involved with the softball program, and I played shortstop on the team. I was also involved in the Criminal Justice Honor Society. After graduation, I began working with the Department of Health and Human Services in Branch County, Michigan, as a Children’s Protective Services investigator, as well as an assistant softball coach at Trine University. I am also engaged to another OC alumnus, Tom Hall ’16. We live in Indiana with our two dogs and new baby girl.
I chose The University of Olivet for many reasons. I think the top of that list has to be the small-town, family-feel to the campus. While walking through campus, I was sure to know at least 10 people by name. Another reason why I am so glad that I chose OC is for the criminal justice program — it is second to none! The professors are extremely knowledgeable in the field and they care about their students. I built a very strong relationship and mentorship with Dr. Regina Armstrong, who is the head of the CJ program. She is still a mentor of mine today, and she has helped shape my love for the CJ profession.
My advice to students is to really get involved and make the most of your time at OC. There are many opportunities on campus to get involved, so do it! Advice for CJ majors specifically, is to work hard and set goals for yourself. Stay ahead in your classes and always reach out to professors if you need help —they are wonderful and always willing to help students that work hard. Find an internship that really interests you, it could possibly be the place that you find your first job (like me)! The University of Olivet really is a great place, and I love looking back on my memories and the relationships that I gained from my time there. Go Comets!
