Chelsea Goodman ‘14 majored in biology at The University of Olivet while preparing to enter medical school after graduation. Thanks to strong relationships with professors, time management skills, leadership opportunities and a great educational foundation, Chelsea has found success in graduate school and beyond.

“I always knew that I wanted to further my education in the medical field and help make a difference to better my community’s health,” Chelsea said. “I had amazing support from not only my professors, but also from the staff in the Office of Admission where I worked as a student. I majored in biology and all of my science courses set me up for success in medical school. The content was not only exceptional and essential for my success in medical school, but it also taught me time management skills.”

Out of the classroom, Chelsea was involved with the Sigma Zeta honor society for science and mathematics students and served as president of the Alpha Pi Upsilon honor society for medical sciences students. She also was a member of the Gruen Chemistry Society and the Global Citizen Honor Program, and is a fellow of the President’s Leadership Institute (PLI).

“As a PLI fellow, I have taken the leadership skills I learned and applied them to my role as a leader in the medical field and my community,” Chelsea said. “I was ahead of many of my classmates due to already having a great foundation and was able to hone these skills while becoming a physician. Also, taking on a full schedule each semester at OC so I could graduate early helped me develop essential time management skills that I value today as a medical student graduating into residency.”

As Chelsea prepared for medical school after graduation, the relationships she built on campus helped influence her positive path. “During my time at Olivet, I developed lifelong friends who have continued to support my goals and aspirations,” she said. “My professors pushed me to reach my fullest potential and helped me gain confidence in my ability to make it through medical school. OC also taught me the value of being an active member in the community and the importance of taking time to give back.”

Chelsea graduated from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in May 2021 and began her residency in family medicine at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids. “I chose to attend LECOM and become an osteopathic physician due to the belief that you need to look at a person as a whole and not as individual parts with a focus on body, mind and spirit,” Chelsea explained. “I also wanted to have the opportunity to offer my patients osteopathic manual manipulation as a treatment option.”

Chelsea’s goal is to become a confident and competent family physician to serve her community. She is eager to continue growing through leadership roles and enjoys celebrating successes with the The University of Olivet family. She hopes other alumni stay connected with OC to support one another and provide mentorship and guidance to current students. Chelsea also gives a special shout out to the faculty in the science department and Honors Program, and she enjoys communicating with her former professors and mentors.

“I hope current students embrace their time at Olivet and take advantage of all the unique opportunities that are afforded to you,” Chelsea added. “Also, to be active in the OC community and not be afraid to take chances and try new things. Professors are always willing to go the extra mile at OC to help hard working students, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. They are all there to see you be successful.”
