The University of Olivet is proud to celebrate two individuals whose lives reflect extraordinary courage, leadership and lifelong commitment to others. Alumnus James “Doc” McCloughan, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, and assistant wrestling coach Dennis Paquette will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame – Michigan Chapter.

James McCloughan ’68

A 1968 Olivet graduate, McCloughan was a standout multi-sport athlete, earning varsity letters in wrestling, football and baseball, and claiming conference championships on the mat. His legacy, however, extends far beyond athletics. As a United States Army combat medic during the Vietnam War, McCloughan risked his life repeatedly to save fellow soldiers. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2017. He went on to dedicate 38 years to teaching and coaching, continuing a life defined by service, mentorship and unwavering character.

McCloughan will receive the Outstanding American award, presented to wrestlers who are highly successful in other walks of life and use the disciplines learned in wrestling in their profession.

Dennis Paquette

Paquette’s impact on wrestling and education is equally enduring. Across a 33-year coaching career—including 28 years at Bangor High School—he compiled 557 dual meet victories, along with 11 conference, 20 district and three regional championships. Known for his integrity and ability to develop student-athletes both on and off the mat, Paquette has also contributed as a leader at the state and national levels and continues to mentor athletes as part of Olivet’s wrestling program.

Paquette will receive the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award, presented in recognition of 20 years or more of dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in the youth through the sport of wrestling.

Together, their inductions recognize more than competitive success. They honor lives devoted to shaping others, strengthening communities and leading with purpose.

The inductions will take place May 16, 2026, beginning at 12 p.m. at Weber’s Inn, 3050 Jackson Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan. For more information or to attend, click here.
