College Advice:
My number one piece of advice for high school students is “get comfortable with being uncomfortable.” College is a new chapter in your life, a way to find yourself and make many great memories. Work hard on your responsibilities, but enjoy it too.
I encourage students to choose The University of Olivet because although it is a small college, it’s incredible to connect with what seems like everyone on campus. From other students to professors, you’ll meet so many people. Olivet also does a great job of giving students many opportunities to join clubs and become a part of things bigger than themselves.
My experience as a Comet has made me who I am by showing me that there’s more to life than just what is in front of you. From taking trips across the world, to bringing people together that you’ll want to have in your life forever, I have had great experiences at Olivet. You don’t just go to class, but rather you get to see so many different things and meet so many people.
Getting Involved:
I am a part of the women’s basketball team as a student assistant right now. I am also in the sorority Sigma Beta. I joined Sigma because I wanted more friends, but I got sisters, which was even better. I am in the Black Student Union, and I joined to be a part of something different. I am learning a lot and feel like I am able to be a part of the black history at Olivet. In addition, I am a part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which helps support student-athletes and athletic events, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, aimed at connecting Christ and athletics. Finally, I am excited to be learning about becoming a better leader, not just at Olivet but also in life, as part of the President’s Leadership Institute.

One challenge I experienced while adjusting to college life was feeling homesick during my first year at OC. I had a terrible time adjusting to such a big change so far from home. All that changed when I joined clubs, especially my sorority. I used that challenge to teach myself that I’ll have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable in life sometimes.
Athletics and Career Goals:
My basketball coach, Brittany Zandstra, is absolutely great. She is very easy going but knows how to instruct the players well and is always there for her players no matter what. It’s really nice when you can have a sense of humor with your coach as well, and she has taught me so much, especially during a rough time. Professors at OC have also helped me so much — not just with the stress of school, but with personal problems, too. They are just always there to laugh with and talk about anything. I hope to use my education and passion for basketball to help basketball teams at the high school, college and professional level. I might even become a coach, too!
