Junior Michael Fisk is a media production and communication major with a minor in sport and recreation management. He has always had a deep passion for sports and has a dream to work in the sports industry. The small community in Olivet has allowed Michael to build close connections and work toward his goals.
“I am from Olivet and went to Olivet schools from kindergarten through the 12th grade. I chose The University of Olivet because it gave me the opportunity to call sports on the radio immediately when I got on campus, which is a career path I was exploring,” Michael explained.
The University of Olivet’s student-led radio station, WOCR 89.1 “The One,” hosts live game broadcasts, music selections, talk shows and much more. The experience as a WOCR team member has continued to impact Michael’s college journey.
“I am a part of one organization on campus and that is WOCR, the College’s FCC-licensed radio station,” Michael said. “I am a part of that because it allows me to be a big part of our athletics without having to be an athlete. I get to broadcast games live over the radio, which has brought me a lot of relationships I would not have had otherwise.”
Michael enjoys close relationships with his professors on campus, especially Professor Daine Pavloski, assistant professor of media studies. Professor Pavloski is the faculty adviser to WOCR and a mentor to students.
“The first interaction I had on campus when I was visiting is still the person who I go to for advice now —my adviser, Professor Pavloski,” Michael said. “He was the person who told me Olivet had opportunities that other colleges do not, which in this case was calling games as soon as I first got to campus. When I was still hesitant, he gave me a push. That is now what I tell people who want to call sports but are unsure — put yourself in a position that makes you uncomfortable because you are never going to find out if you like it or not if you don’t try it.”
While Michael is still researching potential careers within sports, he is grateful to have had so many opportunities to explore the industry as a student.
“I chose the major that I did because I thought it gave me the best opportunity to be able to work in the sports world, which I know is what I want to do,” Michael said. “I am passionate about this field because being from Olivet and having a family that grew up playing sports, it is a huge part of my life. Even though my playing days are over, still being able to impact the sports world in some way is what I am striving to do. How I am preparing for my future is by participating in extracurriculars that involve sports on campus, as well as not allowing myself to get too comfortable with one thing. I am always trying to improve at what I’m good at but also learn new things.”
As Michael nears his senior year, he is looking forward to additional career exploration and honing his professional skillset. He’s also excited to continue making more connections and networking, which has been his favorite part of attending OC.
“I would encourage students to attend The University of Olivet because the professors are very friendly and work with you no matter the issue, and having small class sizes makes you feel as though you matter just as much as the person next to you. Small class sizes also make it easier to get questions answered and that has led to success for me,” Michael said. “Being a Comet has put me in a position to meet people that going into college I would’ve never thought I’d be friends with, and this has led to meeting some of my best friends. Being a Comet has made me more confident in stepping out of my comfort zone and meeting new people.”
