Johnny Brazier lines up his bowling ball.Salt and pepper. Peanut butter and jelly. Risk management and amusement parks?
Junior Johnny Brazier is on the path to creating his own iconic duo with a career goal to work as a risk management specialist for an amusement park. He’s also a college athlete and part of Greek life. He’s engaged on campus with Gamma Iota Sigma and found time to travel internationally. And, Johnny has even built close relationships on campus while expanding his network with an internship.
Hear more about combining all his passions to create the perfect college experience from Johnny:
I am from a very small town, Howard City, so as soon as I stepped foot on Olivet’s campus it felt like home. The decision to come here was something that came easily to me. I was recruited for bowling and fell in love with the program instantly. I also had always wanted to pledge a Greek house and Olivet’s unique Greek life stood out to me.
The opportunity that really helped solidify my decision to attend Olivet was the talent scholarship I earned for bowling. I am so thankful for the chance to receive a scholarship for my passion, something most schools did not offer.
When I was starting college, the bowling team was practically brand new, and it gave me a chance to help build a program from the ground up. Still today, this is one of the reasons I love my team so much. My relationship with my bowling coach, Dave Jackson, is amazing, too. He is always there for us, even when it has nothing to do with bowling, and he is always making sure we are doing everything possible to be successful students and prepared for our jobs after graduation.
I am also a part of the Alpha Lambda Epsilon Greek society on campus. I joined for many reasons, but the biggest reason was to have a family and a place where I felt like I belonged. This was crucial being so far from home.
In addition, I am a part of the Gamma Iota Sigma insurance and risk management academic fraternity. I joined because it is a great way for insurance majors, like myself, to meet others in the field and learn more about future employment options.
The 2019 bowling teamOne day, I hope to be a risk management specialist for an amusement park. Olivet has helped me prepare for my future career through an internship with an amusement park. I’ve also met other people in my field to better understand what I need to do to be prepared for the job.
One of my favorite college experiences was an Intensive Learning Term trip to London, Dublin and Paris. It was not only an opportunity to travel with my classmates on a dream trip, but it was also eye-opening to see the insurance industry in different countries and how it compares to the US industry. It was a culture shock, but overall an experience I will never forget.
I would encourage other students to come to Olivet because it’s not like most colleges. Here, I know all my professors on a personal level, and I know I can turn to them for anything. In addition, campus life is amazing! There’s always something going on for everyone.
Olivet has helped me learn who I really am. The campus is so diverse that you realize there’s no need to hide who you really are. Students really connect with each other, and there’s always someone who can’t wait to introduce you to new and exciting things!
