Ever wonder what it’s like to be a college dancer, cheerleader or mascot? Come find out at a special open gym hosted by the OC Spirit and Stunt team on Sunday, Jan. 14 at Upton Gym! From 4 to 6 p.m., open gym for cheerleaders and mascots will be held, followed by an open gym for dancers from 6 to 8 p.m. Both male and female high school students are welcome to attend the free event, and head coach Trish Thomas will be available to discuss Talent Scholarship opportunities at the end of the event.
“I’m really excited to meet potential new Comets!” coach Thomas said. “I think being able to participate will give students a chance to really see what OC has to offer.” At the open gym event, students will be able to work directly with the current team and Coach Thomas in a practice setting.
Both open gyms will begin with a warm up session. During the open gym for cheerleaders and mascots, students will have the opportunity to learn sideline cheers, stunt with the current team and even display their own tumbling and jumps. Dancers will learn choreography in hip hop and jazz styles before having the chance to showcase their own pieces or freestyle routine at the dance open gym.
In 2017, both the cheer and dance teams earned bids to the National Cheer Association and National Dance Association championships, respectively, and will travel to Daytona for the competition in April 2018. Last year, the cheer team finished the season ranked third in the nation in STUNT as a 12-man division.
