The University of Olivet is pleased to announce that Tom Humphreys has been named director of the college’s nationally recognized risk management and insurance program.

He takes the helm from Carol Breed, J.D., current director and professor of business and insurance, who recently announced her retirement from The University of Olivet. Humphreys’ tenure begins at the start of the fall 2016 semester.

“I am delighted that Tom will be providing his leadership to the The University of Olivet risk management and insurance program,” Breed said. “He is the perfect fit for this position. Our students love his ability to blend years of professional experience into the classroom setting, and his vast industry knowledge and background will provide tremendous direction for the program in the years ahead.”

Humphreys joined The University of Olivet as assistant professor of risk management and insurance in August 2015. In his new role, he will be responsible for the leadership and administration of the undergraduate and graduate insurance programs at Olivet. He will also coordinate numerous special programs under the guidance of the RMI program’s advisory board. These include the Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame, a partnership with Thomas M. Cooley Law School, and a collaboration with the Eaton and Genesee Intermediate School Districts in which high school students participate in insurance coursework through Olivet.

“As director, I look forward to expanding the existing high school program, creating partnerships with insurance companies in the state of the Michigan, and continuing to grow enrollment into the RMI program,” Humphreys said. “I’m thrilled to be at The University of Olivet because it’s known by everyone in the Michigan insurance industry as the beacon for insurance education. I truly look forward to all we will accomplish through this exceptional program in the years ahead.”

A resident of Belding, Humphreys has more than 25 years of business and insurance industry experience with both independent and captive agencies. He has instructed Property & Casualty and Life, Accident & Health insurance licensing courses as well as continuing education courses for Kaplan University across the country for 10 years. His passion for education has been exemplified in serving as president on both the Belding Area Schools Board of Education as well as the Ionia County Intermediate School District Board for a combined 25 years.

Humphreys’ education includes a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications from Michigan State University and a Master of Business Administration from Kaplan University. He has earned professional designations from the American College, The National Alliance and the Insurance Institute of America. He holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), and Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designations. In addition, Humphreys maintains an active insurance producer license in Property & Casualty, Life, Accident & Health, as well as a counselor license in the same disciplines.

The Risk Management and Insurance program at The University of Olivet is considered one of the top risk management and insurance undergraduate programs in the United States.
