Homecoming week is upon us! This week, it’s all about celebrating the traditions and legacy of The University of Olivet, as well as making some new memories. The Comet Carnival celebration began Monday, Sept. 25 with student events; alumni events begin Friday, Sept. 29. It’s not too late to register for events, like special reunions for the Classes of 1967 and 1977, the Alumni Awards Celebration, Red and White Tailgate and Alumni Art Exhibit. This year’s exhibit, Image Resolution: Graphic Design by Tom Hamann ’88 and Vance Orr ’08, both professional graphic designers, will display posters and other works created digitally.
Tom Hamann ’88
Tom Hamann received his Bachelor of Arts in graphic communications from The University of Olivet in 1988 and has since designed for numerous companies and agencies. From 2000 to 2013, Hamann successfully ran his own design and web development company, ZGH Design, Inc. During this time, he also served as an adjunct instructor in the Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC). In 2013, he was named director of KVCC’s Center for New Media. He continues to work on many side projects and personal interest projects.
Vance Orr ’08

Vance W. Orr III received his Bachelor of Arts in studio art with a concentration in graphic design from The University of Olivet in 2008. After graduating, Orr was a design and web consultant for Rainstarr. Later, he was the senior graphic designer for Merlin Eco Solutions. Orr also successfully ran his own business, Vance Orr 3 Design. In 2014, he was named head of the art department for WGVU PBS/NPR in Grand Rapids. His work has been nominated for Emmys, and he has won six MARCOM awards.
Artists’ Talk and Reception
The exhibit will be on display from Sept. 28 to Oct. 27 in the Kresge Foundation Art Gallery in the Riethmiller Blackman Art Building. The artists’ talk and reception is during Homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. – the perfect way to unwind after watching the OC football team take on Hope College at the Cutler Athletic Complex at 2 p.m. The gallery is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or by appointment. Contact Gary Wertheimer, professor of art, at 269.749.7627 or gwertheimer@uolivet.edu for questions.
