Morgan Hackworth’s success in the insurance industry didn’t come from just sitting in a classroom—it came from diving into real-world experiences, building connections and embracing every opportunity that came her way.
Morgan chose The University of Olivet for its nationally recognized insurance program. What she found was more than a great education—she discovered a network of mentors, real-world experience and the confidence to chase her goals. Even before tossing her graduation cap, she’s secured a job as an associate underwriter at Hylant, a global leader in captive insurance and management services.
“I have grown tremendously both personally and professionally since becoming a Comet. The coursework has developed my skills in the insurance field, while my required internships and hands-on projects have given me real-world experience that I can apply,” Morgan said. “Personally, college has helped me grow into a more confident, resilient and self-aware individual.”
A big part of Morgan’s success comes from her willingness to dive headfirst into every opportunity the campus insurance major had to offer. Morgan didn’t just study insurance—she lived it. As a member of Gamma Iota Sigma, she took on leadership roles that strengthened her professional skills.
“I served as the officer of membership involvement for our local chapter. I organized events for members to participate in that ultimately worked on retaining members and recruiting new ones,” she said. “I also served on the Student Advisory Council for the Grand Chapter where I helped organize conferences, brainstorm new ideas with peers and make sure we are helping chapters have access to opportunities. Along with that, I served as the social media chair where I posted updates to engage members, alumni and insurance professionals.”
In addition, Morgan is a member of the University’s President’s Leadership Institute. She and her fellow members are working to bring positive change to campus. Morgan’s team is working on a proposal to provide transportation for students to Charlotte for entertainment opportunities.
She also embraced opportunities to travel, network and gain firsthand exposure to the insurance industry.
“Some of my favorite experiences at UOlivet have been the insurance conferences we attend as a part of Gamma Iota Sigma,” she said. “I have traveled to North Carolina, Indianapolis, Columbus, Cincinnati, Florida, and more—all free of cost thanks to the program. During these conferences, I got closer with my peers who will eventually be my coworkers in the industry. This has helped me grow as a person because I am introduced to real-life experiences outside of UOlivet.”
Through her coursework, leadership roles and industry connections, Morgan gained a clear vision for her future. “My goal is to pursue leadership positions and make an impact by educating myself on new problems and finding solutions. I accepted a job opportunity as an associate underwriter at Hylant and have started working part-time during school before transitioning to full-time after graduation.”
She credits much of her success to the mentorship she received at Olivet. “I have a close relationship with the past insurance advisor Tom Humphreys. He helped me grow by always pushing me to say yes to opportunities that scared me. He helped me earn my producers license in the state of Michigan as well as my designation-UACRM. He has a wealth of knowledge in insurance and extended that to everyone in the program. He gave me connections to professionals and access to opportunities I could only dream of,” said Morgan.
Morgan’s journey at UOlivet proves that success isn’t just about hitting the books—it’s about embracing every opportunity, building meaningful connections and pushing beyond comfort zones.
