Tim Eilola recently joined the The University of Olivet admissions team to serve as an admissions representative. As a recent college graduate himself, Tim is passionate about helping students explore their own educational opportunities. He believes The University of Olivet’s commitment to inclusivity and a relationship-based education model makes it an excellent choice for high school students.
Prior to joining the admissions team, Tim connected with fellow students at his alma mater as a tour guide and new student orientation leader. Through these roles, Tim helped welcome high school students and first-year students to campus and also developed his relationship-building, communication and customer service skills. In addition, Tim also gained a variety of experience in sports management through his path of study.
What brought you to The University of Olivet, and why do you love OC?
I was looking for a career in admissions and I felt like the staff here was the best for me to learn from and grow under. I love OC because it felt like home from the first step I took on campus. I love the close-knit community that comes with a small college.
What is your recruiting style like?
My recruiting style is fun and informative. I remember going to fairs and being nervous about going up to tables to talk to admissions counselors, so I try to make it as fun and comfortable as I can. This should be an exciting time for the students, not something they stress over.
Where does your passion for admissions stem from?
My passion for admissions started when I was a tour guide at the college I attended. I loved taking families on tour, getting to know them and seeing how the school would fit their career goals. I really enjoy helping people, and being in admissions, I get to do that every day.
What’s the average day in your role, or some of the unique things you are responsible for?
The average day in my role is either being on campus meeting with families or traveling to fairs and schools to meet with prospective students. I travel all over, including areas in northern Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
Why do you encourage students to attend OC?
I encourage students to attend OC for the liberal arts degree. A liberal arts education teaches students three key things: leadership, communication and critical thinking, which you need to be successful in anything you do. Also, the small class sizes, with our average being around 15 students per classroom, allow students to get that one-on-one time with professors. They really get to know the students on a personal level.
What do you look forward to in your role?
I am looking forward to seeing the students that I help bring to campus be successful. I want to see them do well in the classroom and walk across that stage in four years.
What advice do you share with students?
Get involved in many different areas on campus and branch out. It will help you grow as an individual and looks great on a resume.
What is an interesting or little-known fact about yourself?
I am a triplet with two brothers, but we don’t look alike.
