Shawn Hagadon serves as housing coordinator and executive assistant to the vice president and dean of student life. In her roles, she supports students in many aspects of their college journeys, from coordinating events to ensuring each Comet has a comfortable place to live and learn. Shawn has been a member of the The University of Olivet family for five years and has special interests in helping each student succeed in their lives outside of the classroom.
What brought you to OC, and why do you love OC?
At the time I applied to The University of Olivet in 2014, I was looking for a job I could grow in. I wanted to learn as much as I could and have a chance at advancing. I was hired in the Student Services Department as a customer service representative. During my time in that department, I was given a lot of great opportunities to learn and grow. In August of 2015, I transferred to the Student Life Department and what a ride it has been. I continue to take it all in every day — the students, the team, the leadership. It has been a great experience and I am grateful to be a part of it.
What is your favorite memory from your time at OC?
Halloween is my favorite time of the year and I love dressing up as a team.
What’s the average day in your role, or some of the unique things you are responsible for?
I am responsible for many things here in student life and housing. I maintain all the Title IX files and generate the judicial files. I assign incoming students their room and board for the academic year and organize the housing lottery each year for returning students. This includes interfacing with admissions, coaches, student services and other groups to ensure appropriate housing assignments. Another important part of my role is to process and approve petition-to-stay applications. Many students elect to stay at the College over breaks, like winter break and spring break, and I work to ensure each student has the appropriate accommodations. Other responsibilities include monitoring housing, Student Life and the wellness budgets; assisting in the planning and participation of all departmental training; approving all postings for clubs and organizations; and assisting Residence Life, Campus Activity boards, the Student Government Association and Greek life.
Why do you encourage students to attend OC?
I encourage students to attend The University of Olivet because of the one-on-one relationships they can make with the faculty and staff that they might not get at a bigger school. Also, I believe some students need the smaller classes to be able to succeed.
What do you look forward to in your role?
I look forward to New Student Orientation events every year. I love the energy campus has on those days and it is always great meeting and talking to new students and their families.
What is an interesting or little-known fact about yourself?
I own and operate Starr Dance Studio in Bellevue and serve as a dance and fitness instructor. I love to teach and motivate others to take care of themselves!
