Rich Lehman ’12 serves The University of Olivet as a student account specialist, and is known for his warm smile, friendly demeanor and desire to make others laugh. He has served The University of Olivet for nearly six years, connecting with countless students during his time as a Comet. In addition to his regular duties, Rich can often be found supporting students at athletic events and extracurricular activities, welcoming incoming freshmen at New Student Orientation and supporting faculty and staff members in their roles.
Why do you love working at The University of Olivet?
I really like working with students whenever I can. I enjoy helping them through a time of growth in their lives. I also really like that the location of The University of Olivet keeps me close to my family – very close to my sons when they were students. In addition, my coworkers are awesome, especially my boss, Libby Jean, director of student services. I admire her leadership abilities and appreciate her dedication to bringing out the best in her team.
Where does your passion for working with students stem from?
I’ve always been interested in athletics and serving as a coach to help students discover new things about themselves. I think because I have always had a passion for coaching, this position is a way I can be a coach for the students in a different area of life.
What is the average day in your job, or some of the unique things you are responsible for?
I do some basic functions like helping with the front desk and answering incoming phone calls, as well as working with student accounts and overseeing charges from the bookstore, parking fines or regular tuition payments. I really like that I am able to help students and parents understand the cost of attending The University of Olivet and working closely with the Business Office to make sure scholarships are applied to student accounts.
Why do you encourage students to attend OC?
The University of Olivet is a great place for students to get individualized attention. They can also step into a leadership role right away with one of the many clubs and organizations, athletic teams or honor societies on campus. This is a great opportunity for students to quickly build their resumes as they develop their skills and talents.
What do you look forward to in your role?
We’ll begin welcoming future Comets at New Student Orientations in June. I always like the high energy on campus during these events and seeing all of the potential in students.
What is the number one piece of advice you share with students?
Enjoy college, but don’t forget to keep your eye on the prize – graduation! Sometimes students let things bring them down or get them off track. Four years go by quickly, so don’t forget what you are here for, learn new things, sharpen your skills and develop your resume.
What is an interesting or little known fact about yourself?
I have 18 years experience as a coach! This summer I will be coaching a 16 and under baseball team, and can’t wait to hit the field with those young men.
