Matthew Gay serves as the head coach for The University of Olivet’s outdoor recreation and competitive clay target program. The program supports Michigan’s long-standing outdoor traditions and provides a unique opportunity for thousands of active high school student-athletes to continue their sport at the college level with great benefits. Team and academic requirements ensure responsibility and safety are top priorities.
Coach Gay has extensive experience coaching students of all ages and competing in clay sports himself. Now, he is proud to be using his skills to build Olivet’s program and support Comet student-athletes.
What brought you to OC?
A fellow sporting clays competitor mentioned that Olivet had decided to start a program and suggested that I contact the athletic director to have a discussion about the role. At the least, I thought I could assist in the search for a coach, but it ended up being a great opportunity for me.
What is your favorite memory from your time at OC?
While I’ve only been a part of the OC team since August, I really enjoyed meeting my student-athletes for the first time.
Where do your passions for coaching and competitive clay sports stem from?
I’m an extremely competitive individual; I even played three sports in high school. I have been in competitive clay sports for many years and saw a serious need for leadership and coaching in the youth programs. My desire to further the sport motivates me to serve as a coach and advocate.
What’s the average day in your role, or some of the unique things you are responsible for?
My day typically consists of planning competition and training methodologies, including sports psychology training.
Why do you encourage students to attend OC?
It’s a great school. The community environment is very accepting and a great place for students to learn without simply being a number in a computer.
What do you look forward to in your role?
I am excited to help build the program. This program can become quite significant in terms of success and size.
What is an interesting or little-known fact about yourself?
I am an amateur horologist — someone who studies time.
